Blowing and drifting snow is possible across west central Minnesota today as wind increase to around 20 mph from the west and northwest.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen said the wind gusts this afternoon could reach 28 mph in west central Minnesota.

Very strong northwest winds are possible across western and southern Minnesota Friday night and Saturday as low pressure system moves southeast across the Great Lakes. Wind speeds of 25 to 35 mph may occur at that time accompanied by another surge of Arctic air. This could lead to dangerous wind chills along with considerable blowing and drifting snow.

The extended forecast for the Willmar area is:

This Afternoon: Patchy blowing snow. Cloudy, with a high near 31. Wind chill values between -4 and 5. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 18 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 0. Wind chill values between -7 and -12. Blustery, with a west northwest wind 17 to 20 mph decreasing to between 5 and 8 mph. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values between -3 and -13. Southwest wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: Occasional flurries. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9. Wind chill values between -4 and 6. West southwest wind 5 to 11 mph becoming north northwest.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 17. Northwest wind between 6 and 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 2.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 26.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20.

Friday: Partly sunny and breezy, with a high near 32.
