Boys Basketball: ACGC, BBE, NLS play for state tourney berths Friday
The Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and New London-Spicer boys basketball teams are all playing today in three separate section championship games.
ACGC (20-7) will meet United South Central (21-4) at 6 p.m. in the Section 2A final at Minnesota State in Mankato. Neither the Falcons or USC have played in the boys state basketball tournament. However, Wells, where USC High School is located, did make state in 1930 and three times in the ’60s.
In Section 5A, top-ranked BBE looks to return to state after getting upset last year in the Section 6A semifinals. The Jaguars (27-1) take on Browerville (21-5) at 7 p.m. at Alexandria High School, not in Crosby as the schedule earlier indicated. BBE won the state title in 2012 — the only year Browerville has made the state tournament — and was runner-up the previous year.
NLS, also looking to return to the state tourney after winning the Class AA title in 2010, meets old West Central Conference rival Melrose in the Section 6AA final at 6 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall on the campus of St. Cloud State University.
The Wildcats (18-10) have won 6 straight, while the Dutchmen (19-9) are looking to play at state for the first time since winning the Class A title in 1974.
