Boys basketball: Another Good-win for BBE

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Brian Goodwin squares up for a jump shot over the New London-Spicer defense in the first half on Tuesday in New London. The junior guard had 18 points at halftime.

NEW LONDON —  Brian Goodwin sank 6 of 6 at the free-throw line in the last 59 seconds to hold off a late surge by New London-Spicer 71-62 on Tuesday.

The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa junior guard — already a third-year starter — finished with 35 points.

NLS trailed 39-21 at halftime but didn’t let up and had cut the gap to seven points with under a minute to play.

The Jaguars ran their unbeaten streak to 38 games and 70-1 since the start of the 2010-11 season  — the loss to  Springfield in the 2011 Class A championship game,

The win streak is the longest in the state — boys or girls hoops.

In recent history head-to-head, BBE beat NLS 89-57 at Brooten on Feb. 2 this year; the Cats sacked BBE 85-60 on March 17, 2009, at St. John’s in the Section 6AA semifinals.

BBE shoots for show and defends for dough. In the first half, the Jaguars’ zone continually provoked Wildcat errors or collapsed to block shots without drawing a foul.

Billy Borgerding and James Kuefler each finished with 13 points for BBE.

Brett Olson, Ryan Vraa and Joey Dreier reached double figures for NLS (1-3), which plays at Montevideo on Friday.

The Jags play another neighboring rival on Friday when they entertain Sauk Centre at Brooton.
