Brian Goodwin was one of many Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa players to participate in nine boys state basketball tournament games over the past four seasons. Along the way the star guard put himself in some pretty good company when it came to scoring.

Goodwin, who was one of five Mr. Basketball finalists this season, scored a total of 188 points (20.9 ppg) in eight wins and one loss at a combined three state appearances, which generated two Class A titles for the Jaguars.

As a freshman Goodwin scored 35 points on the Jaguars’ runner-up squad in 2011. A year later he netted 69 points — 29 in the final — to help BBE claim its first state championship and last week he dropped another 84 points, including 35 in the quarterfinals, to help BBE win another title. The standout finishes his prep career with 2,112 points, the fifth-best total in the Tribune’s history and 60th on Minnesota’s all-time scoring list.

Only Ellsworth’s Cody Schilling (267), Minneapolis North’s Khalid El-Amin (238), Braham’s Isaiah Dahlman (236), Melrose’s Mark Olberding (228), DeLaSalle’s Ben Johnson (227), New Prague’s Ron Johnson (203) and Staples-Motley’s Erik Kelly (200) scored more in their state tournament showings than Goodwin.

A superb defensive player as well, Goodwin’s name appears in Minnesota’s top 10 list of career steals at No. 8 with 436.
