MARSHALL — When it came to shooting Saturday in the fieldhouse on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University, the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks sizzled and the MACCRAY Wolverines, well, they fizzled.

Each team put up 45 shots but MACCRAY hooped only 13 (28 percent) compared to 24 (53 percent) by Dawson-Boyd.

That made it look easy for the ’Jacks who won the Section 3A-North championship game 61-37.

The No. 9-ranked Blackjacks (22-5) play No. 3 Southwest Minnesota Christian (26-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday at SMSU for the 3A championship.

How hot were the Blackjacks? Jess Hansen took 5 three-pointers and made each on the way to 19 points without missing a shot, including two free throws and his only two-point attempt.

Joey Lee made 9 of 14 shots on the way to a game-high 20 points, plus supplying 4 assists and 4 steals. Michael Lee (7 rebounds) and Nathaniel Huot (3 of 6 on three’s) each finished with 9 points.

MACCRAY made only 4 of 19 shots the first half to fall behind 30-10. When the Wolverines’ shooting didn’t heat up the second half either, it was too much to make up against a team they’d split with during the Camden Conference campaign.

The Wolverines, who had won 11 straight since a loss to Class AA Redwood Valley, finish 22-6. It was the third straight year the two teams had met in the North final and the Blackjacks second straight win in the showdown.

Taylor Thissen topped the Wolverines’ scoring column with 12 points followed by Bailey Boike with 7 and Cody Boonstra with 5. The final output was 22 points under MACCRAY’s season average.

The Blackjacks lost in last year’s 3A final to the SMC Eagles, who went on to reach the state championship game where they fell to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 54-45.

SMC and Dawson-Boyd met early in December with the Eagles capturing a 72-51 win, a game also played at SMSU. The Eagles have won 22 straight since their only loss to Sioux Falls (S.D.) Christian.
