Boys Basketball: Cardinals roll past Sartell 64-55

Tribune Staff Report

WILLMAR -- Even though they're on top of the Central Lakes boys basketball standings, the Willmar Cardinals seldom make it look easy.

The Sartell Sabres came to the Willmar gym with a modest 7-14 record but proved a handful Thursday.

The Sabres even took a five-point lead early in the second half. Dean Stier's only field goal of the game, a 3-pointer, tied the score and Willmar would never relinquish a lead after that to take a 64-55 win.

Willmar goes to 10-3 in the loop. Rocori and St. Cloud Tech kept pace; the Spartans (9-4) drilled Fergus Falls 61-44 while Tech (8-4) drilled Alexandria 74-56. Brainerd, at 7-5 after sinking Sauk Rapids 68-63, is not out of it.

Last night, Willmar got 18 points from Austin Rambow 13 from Alex Grove and 9 apiece from Matt Suedbeck and Jeremy Olson.

Rebounding was a factor in the win. Willmar stats showed a 34-17 advantage with Rambow and Grove combining to collect 17 caroms.

Sartell's 6-foot-7 Tim Immelman led the visitors with 16 points.

The Cardinals are chasing their first Central Lakes Conference crown since they shared the hardware in 2007-08 with St. Cloud Tech, both finishing 17-1.

The Cardinals play a non-conference game at 2:30 Saturday when they host Bemidji (11-10). Willmar (10-3, 14-6) returns to CLC play Tuesday at Alexandria.
