Boys Basketball: Cards dig up rally to clip Spuds

Tribune Staff Report

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals picked up a road victory by beating the Moorhead Spuds 63-59 on Saturday in the second game of a non-conference girl-boy afternoon doubleheader.

Jimmy Unger with 22 points and Austin Rambow with 20 led the way.

The Cardinals, who are 9-1 at home, improved to 4-5 on the highway. They host Sartell on Thursday and Bemidji on Saturday.

Willmar turned a three-point deficit midway through the second half into a five-point advantage at 50-45 after a three-pointer by Unger and two buckets by Rambow fueled an 8-0 run. Unger canned five treys on the day.

Moorhead got as close as two after that, but free throws down the stretch sealed the Cardinal win.

"That was the difference right there," said Willmar coach Steve Grove of the run. "We held on after that."

It was Willmar's second win in under 24 hours against a Class 4A team; Willmar beat Brainerd 73-62 on Friday to take sole possession of the first place in the Central Lakes Conference.

Willmar improves to 13-6 overall while the Spuds dropped to 13-5.
