Joel Carter double-doubled and Kyler Johnson scored 21 points for Willmar (1-1, 3-2).

“Our defense really came on strong in the beginning and caused a lot of turnovers which in turn created a lot of shots for us,” Willmar head coach Steve Grove said.

Carter did a little bit of everything, collecting 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals and 6 assists.

“(Joel) did a nice job of getting in the lane and getting some nice kickouts,” Grove said. “He really played well … he played bigger than his size.”

Willmar led 40-32 at the half.

“In the first half with full court pressure it created some good runs,” Grove said. “We had some nice layups on some good transitions.”

Willmar shot 51 percent from the field with 33 boards and was 14-20 at the free throw line.

Adam Nibaur added 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, and Dylan Schueler had 9 points and 4 rebounds.

The Cardinals next play Friday at Rocori.
