HOWARD LAKE -- Despite trailing for most of the game, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa forced Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted into overtime in a battle for first place in the Central Minnesota Conference boys basketball race.

But the Lakers were deadly from the free-throw line and handed the Jaguars a 74-70 loss Friday.

HLWW (6-1, 11-3), who is now tied for the league's top spot with the Jaguars (6-1, 14-3), missed only four out of 33 free-throw attempts in the game. The Lakers held a slim 31-29 halftime lead, and that margin repeated itself quite often in the second half.

Trailing 62-60 in the last seconds, Matt Goodwin drove the length of the court and scored on an un- contested layup with six seconds left to tie the game.

In overtime, HLWW made a basket and sank 10-of-10 charity tosses to earn the win.

Nach Faulk led the Lakers with 29 points, followed by Jeff Hammer and Keith Diers with 12 and Zach Grangroth with 11.

Goodwin scored 19 points to pace the Jaguars. Mike Rodgers followed with 14 points and five assists, Kevin Keufler added 12 points and six rebounds, and Shane Weller had 12 points.
