Boys basketball: Lakers clip Wildcats in OT

NEW LONDON — Minnewaska took advantage of New London-Spicer fouls and beat the Wildcats 74-72 in overtime on Tuesday in New London.

The teams were tied at 62 after regulation, and the Lakers shot 9-of-14 on free throws in the overtime period to come away with a win.  

Austin Lieser and Austin Ostrander paced the Lakers with 15 points each, and Ostrander added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jayden Beecher had 14 points and Isaiah Adams grabbed 14 rebounds.

Joey Dreier and Aaron Ruter each scored 18 points for the Wildcats, and Dreier had 10 steals.  

NLS also lost its opener by two points.

Dylan Erickson and Dazhown Coleman picked up the scoring duties for Lac qui Parle Valley after senior center Eric Smith went down with an ankle injury early in the game. Erickson exploded for a game-high 32 points and Coleman added another 21 for the Eagles, who nearly squandered a 14-point lead in the second half.

LQPV (1-1) went on a 12-1 run to start the second half to expand its 29-26 lead at halftime, but Ortonville chipped away and got within 2 with six minutes left.

Erickson scored 20 points in the second half while Coleman paced the Eagles with 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

Six more makes from the free throw line and 24 points from Mason Clark helped Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart edge the visiting Bluejays (0-2) in its opener.

Clark was 9-for-11 from the charity stripe to outscore CMCS by himself at the foul line. The Mustangs were 14-for-23 while CMCS was 8-for-11. Kyle Kubesh added a double-double for BLHS with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Austin Bulthuis with 14 points, Grant Hoekstra 12, Nick Daugherty 11 and Zach Zwart 9 paced a balanced attack for CMCS. Daugherty hooked a team-high 8 rebounds while Bulthuis made 5 steals and Hoekstra added 4 steals and 3 assists.
