Boys basketball: MACCRAY edges Thunder Hawks

CLARA CITY — The clash of neighboring school districts came down to the final seconds on Monday evening.
With 15 seconds left, Montevideo’s freshman forward Troy Diggins potted a pair of free throws to forge a 48-all tie.
The MACCRAY Wolverines came back the other way and Carter Asche took a 3-point shot from the corner. It snapped the net with 4 seconds showing on the second-half clock.
The Thunder Hawks desperation 3-pointer hit the backboard and the Wolverines celebrated a 51-48 victory.
The Wolverines (9-3) led at half 25-21; the second half was nip-and-tuck all the way.
Diggins finished with 15 points, Jordan Thompson 10, Austin Hansen 9 and Ryan Maroney 8. The Hawks played minus top scorer Jesse Brace, reportedly out with a knee injury.
Asche’s 17 points topped the Wolverines’ scoring column. Taylor Thissen supplied 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The Jaguars’ Brian Goodwin scored 17 points, James Kuefler had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Trey Heinsius scored 10 points.
The 13-0 Jaguars had the game well in hand by halftime but head coach Dave Montbriand said the team’s shooting needs work. BBE shot 42 percent but hit just 2 of 12 3-pointers and 5 of 11 free throws.
“Hopefully we’ll start making some threes and free throws,” Montbriand said. “Right now we’re winning with defense.”
BBE, which upped its state-best winning streak to 46 games, plays next at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Lakers (7-3 overall) and Jaguars both are 3-0 in the Central Minnesota Conference.
“A road game there, that’s one of the tough ones on our schedule,” Montbriand said.
