Boys Basketball: NLS drills New Century Academy
WILLMAR — Only one player scored in double figures for New London-Spicer Thursday. But only three players scored for the Wildcats’ opponent as NLS beat New Century Academy 79-8 in the opening round of the Bremer Bank Holiday Classic.
Nick Kester’s 12 points paced a group of 12 players that scored for the unbeaten Wildcats against the Spartans of a private school from Hutchinson. New London-Spicer led 40-4 at halftime and New Century Academy made 3 field goals and a couple of free throws for the game.
The Wildcats will take on Willmar at 9 p.m. today for the 10th time in the last 11 years in the final of the long-running Holiday tournament hosted by the Cardinals. NLS will be looking to capture the title for the first time since 2007.
“We talked about how to not allow the game to be an open gym-type game,” said NLS coach Chad Schmiesing. “We wanted to keep the intensity, value the basketball and play smart.
“We’ve got our hands full with Willmar. When they shoot well, they are tough to beat. (Tyler) Stegeman and (Kyler) Johnson are shooting well, and (Austin) Grove at times as well. And they have (Adam) Nibaur in the middle. They have a lot of good athletes and we hope to wear them down and keep the tempo up.”
Devin Fostervold added 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for New London-Spicer.
Brandon Meyer had a team-high 5 steals and also hooked 5 rebounds.
The Spartans will play for third place today at 7:30 p.m. against Benson.
