Boys Basketball: Owls clip Ashby in 6A-South playoffs

ASHBY — Hancock made 9 of 10 free throws in the final two minutes to outlast No. 7-seed Ashby 50-42 in the opening round of the Section 6A-South playoffs Monday.

The No. 10-seeded Owls (4-19) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and now play No. 2 Wheaton/Herman-Norcross (20-3) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The Warriors beat Hancock twice during the regular season.

Taylor Holleman paced the Owls Monday with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Noah Kannegiesser and Collin Brown added 11 points apiece as Hancock overcame poor field goal shooting (33 percent) by going 15-for-18 at the free throw line. Brandon Shaw added 7 rebounds.

The Owls avenged a 7-point loss to Ashby (13-14) earlier in the season.
