Boys basketball roundup: Alex hits the mark at Morris/CA

MORRIS — Morris native Forrest Witt brought his Alexandria Cardinals to his home town on Tuesday and they put on a shooting demonstration.

The Cardinals made 10 of 20 3-pointers in the Morris gym and shot 55 percent overall in a 72-50 victory over Morris/Chokio-Alberta.

Five different Cards hit at least one triples: juniors John Vogeler and David Krivanek drilled three apiece.

The game’s top scorer, Logan Doyle of Alex, scored 16 of his 22 points in the visitor’s 38 point second half. Doyle, a 6-foot-8 senior, headed to South Dakota State also snared 14 rebounds.

Alexandria went to 7-11 while Morris/CA dropped to 15-5.

Austin Dierks led the Tigers with 16 points.

Witt, the Alex head coach, was one of three Witt brothers that starred in multiple sports at Morris and later in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Benson 90 OT

Benson nearly won in regulation after trailing by seven points in the final minute, but Eden Valley-Watkins made nine free throws in overtime and held off the Braves in a non-conference game on Tuesday night in Benson.

The Braves, now 8-11, trailed by 14 points with about four minutes to go but the Ahrndts, Aaron and Matt, caught fire, combining to hit three 3-point shots to tie the game at 84-84. Matt Ahrndt had a 3-point attempt for the win fall away in the final six seconds.

Matt Ahrndt scored a game-high 43 points — he was 13 of 17 shooting inside the 3-point arc — and Colin Ose had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Aaron Ahrndt hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and 6 assists.

Bret Mattice scored a team-high 37 points for EV-W while Kirby Knutson finished with 22 points. Jared Streit had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Ian Engstrom scored a career-high 37 points to lead the Jaguars to the win over E.C.H.O. Charter on Tuesday in Renville.

Engstrom and Mitch Treml, who scored 10 points, both had a team-high 6 rebounds and Engstrom also had 5 steals. Brady Holwerda had 8 points and 7 assists and Roly Barajas scored 11 points.

Litchfield held Paynesville to a seven-point first half, and rolled past the Bulldogs.

Zach Whitchurch scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers for the Dragons (14-5). Zach Kinny added 11 points and 4 assists, and Dylan Koll had 9 points and 4 assists.

Five Lakers scored in double figures and another scored 9 in a solid win over the Thunder Hawks on Tuesday in Glenwood.

Isaiah Adams led Minnewaska with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Jayden Beecher finished with 12 points, Austin Giese and Austin Lieser both scored 11, Jake Amundson had 10 points and 5 assists and Austin Ostrander had 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Jordan Thompson hit five 3-point shots, scored a game-high 23 points and had 6 boards for Montevideo. Teammates Troy Diggins scored 11 points and Ricky Schmitz finished with 10 points.

The Lakers will have a tough outing on Friday, traveling to play Class AA’s top team, Melrose, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Lac qui Parle Valley cut Canby’s lead to three points late in the game but the Lancers hit five of six free throws in the final minute to hold off the Eagles in a non-conference game Tuesday night.

Dylan Erickson scored 26 points but another top Eagles scorer, Eric Smith, was limited by foul trouble and finished with 5 points.

Dazhown Coleman had 6 points and 7 rebounds.

Canby’s Michael Sisk scored a team-high 23 points.
