Boys basketball roundup: BBE bounces back, beats Maple Lake

Email

MAPLE LAKE — Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa bounced back from its loss to Melrose last week that snapped a 50-game winning streak.

The Jaguars rebounded from a halftime deficit and held Maple Lake to a dozen second-half points in a 57-36 Central Minnesota Conference win on Tuesday.

Maple Lake packed its defense in early in the game, threw a box-and-one defense at the Jaguars and were extremely deliberate on offense, said BBE head coach Dave Montbriand.

“It just kind of frustrated us for awhile,” said Montbriand, whose team trailed by two at the half. “But we started hitting some shots — we were missing some open shots. Once we got ahead, (Maple Lake) had to be more aggressive.”

Brian Goodwin led the Jaguars with 18 points and James Kuefler and Trey Heinsius both scored 13. Heinsius also had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Nick Benton finished with 7 points and 10 rebounds.

The Jaguars still have a home winning streak of 53 straight games and they finally get the chance to take another step toward the state record when they play Rockford at home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

After a Jan. 5 home win over MACCRAY, the Jaguars played eight of their next nine games on the road.

The state’s longest home winning streak is 56 games set by Esko from 1973 to 1979.
