Boys basketball roundup: Blackjacks down Canby

DAWSON — The Class A No. 4-ranked Blackjacks netted nine 3-pointers — from 5 players — and nearly doubled up Canby on makes from the free throw line to collect a 63-52 Camden Conference win Thursday.

Unbeaten Dawson-Boyd, which improved to 7-0 in the conference and 9-0 overall, was paced by Joey Lee’s 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Michael Lee added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Jess Hansen led the three-point barrage with 3 makes in 5 attempts. Noah Stelter and Joey Lee each made 2 treys while Michael Lee and Kyler Collins added 1 each.

The Lancers, who were handed just their third loss in 13 games, had 3 players score in double figures, paced by Zach Nuy’s 16.

Tied at 62 at the end of regulation, Central Minnesota Christian overtook Lakeview with a 10-point overtime period.

The Wolverines’ 6-foot-5 senior center Bailey Boike had a huge game with 29 points, 6 assists and 19 rebounds and Carter Asche was equally devastating with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 8 blocked shots but the Knights rode away from the host team in the second half.

The Knights nursed a 34-33 lead at the break but outscored MACCRAY, at Clara City, 46-33 in the last 18 minutes.

There was just too much Brett. Leaders for RTR were Brett Peterson with 33 points, Brett Knutsen with 23 and Brett Vercruysse with 20. Peterson also picked off 16 rebounds helping the Knights jump to 7-2.

 Nick Benton, a 6-4 senior center, chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Fighting Saints snapped a 35-game losing streak dating back to March 1, 2012 with help of Preston Mahlum’s game-high 30 points. The sophomore forward was 15-for-16 shooting from the field and netted 18 points in the second half.

Also scoring in double figures for KMS (1-9) was James Faulkner with 15 and Taylor Feldman 10. Brody Lindquist supplied 9 rebounds and Josh Peterson 8 assists.

After shooting 25 percent from the field in the first half and in a 32-19 hole, New London-Spicer shot 59 percent in the second half and scored 46 points to overtake Paynesville.

Ryan Vraa, who finished with 14 points, hit a three-pointer with 5:47 remaining to give the Wildcats their first lead at 51-50, which kicked off a 17-6 run.

NLS hit five treys in the final 8 minutes.

Brett Olson led the Wildcats with 20 points and Shane Zylstra had 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Mitchell Weidner paced Paynesville with 20 points and five 3-pointers.
