Boys basketball roundup: Falcons edge Kimball

GROVE CITY — The Falcons rallied in the final three minutes to overtake the Kimball Cubs 74-71 on Thursday in a non-conference boys basketball game.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City trailed 68-62 with three minutes left but outscored the Cubs 12-3 down the stretch. Steals by Brody Larson and then Taylor Larson led to buckets; also a pair of free throws each by David Kinzler and Brody Larson fueled the fiery finish. Taylor Larson made 1 of 2 freebies in the final moments to ice it.

Colten Minnick, a 6-2 sophomore forward, had a huge game pouring in 23 points and nabbing 13 rebounds.

But scoring was well distributed: Brody Larson 17, Taylor Larson 13, Kinzler 12 and Adam Johnson 7 points plus 6 rebounds.

Both teams were hot from the field (each shooting 48 percent) and also the line where the Cubs were 8 of 8 and the Falcons 17 of 21 (81 percent).

ACGC takes their 3-0 start down to Olivia tonight to play the BOLD Warriors, a West Central Conference conflict.

It was the first setback for the Cubs after also starting 3-0. Junior center Jarred Merchant led all scorers with 28 points, plus he had a team-high 8 rebounds.

James Nitz stuffed the stat sheet by piling up 27 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists to pace Ortonville (3-1). Noah Kottke added 20 points behind 6 three-pointers.

Brady Holwerda’s 18 points and 3 blocks, and Nathan Refsland’s 14 points and 7 rebounds led Renville County West’s attack. Colin Thompson added a team-high 5 assists.

Garrett Olson had 16 points and Kellen Kessler followed with 14 to help produce the first win of the season for Lac qui Parle Valley.

Olson also hooked 9 rebounds and pocketed a couple of steals as the Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half. Kody Nesvold and Noah Jensen corralled 7 rebounds each and Brandon Hill dished out 4 assists for LQPV (1-2).

Logan DeBlieck put in a game-high 20 points and Chase Richter supplied another 13 for the Sting (0-4).
