Boys Basketball Roundup: Litchfield loses on buzzer-beater

ST. CLOUD — Northfield made an offensive putback as time expired Thursday to post a 53-51 win over Litchfield in the quarterfinals of the St. Cloud Cathedral Classic.

Litchfield, down by as much as 12, fought back and tied the game with 18 seconds left when Cody Rau made a three-pointer. Northfield then controlled the clock and got a shot off in the final seconds. The Raiders misfired but got the offensive rebound. Another shot couldn’t drop, but the Raiders corralled the rebound again and made good on the second chance.

The Dragons (3-4) will play Pierz today at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Alex Hendricks paced a balanced Litchfield attack with 10 points with Rau and Andy Schneider both following with 9. Rau also chipped in a game-high 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Eric Madsen and Josh Polingo also pulled in 5 rebounds.

Luke Harris netted a game-high 26 points for the Raiders.

The Thunder Hawks bolted out to a 46-29 lead at halftime en route to picking up their sixth win of the season. Montevideo will look to improve to 7-2 today when it faces host Marshall in the second round of the round-robin tournament at 7:45 p.m.

Jordan Thompson ignited the Thunder Hawks against the younger Panthers of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton with 18 points on 6 three-pointers. Dazhown Coleman followed with 14 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Troy Diggins and Jimmy Haff added 9 points each with Diggins also supplying the Thunder Hawks with 9 assists and 5 rebounds.

Spencer Hildahl grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds for Montevideo.
