NEW LONDON —A more aggressive second half on both ends of the floor sparked the top-seeded Wildcats after a slow start to beat St. John’s Prep 67-44 on Thursday.

No. 8 St. John’s Prep led 28-27 at halftime before NLS outscored the visitors 40-16 in the second half.

Adam Essler ignited the second-half rally with a 3-pointer, a shot that opened a 22-0 run for NLS. It took St. John’s Prep 7½ minutes to find the scoreboard in the second half.

NLS (16-10) will face former West Central Conference rival Paynesville in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. John’s University in Collegeville.

Brett Olson with 16 points, Ryan Vraa 14 and Ethan Bohlsen 11 topped the Wildcats’ scoring column. Tyson Gislason added 14 rebounds and Shane Zylstra chipped 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks.

Cody Rau’s 16 points paced Litchfield as the Dragons advanced to the Section 6AA-South semifinals.

Eric Madsen notched 8, and Dylan Kotzer and Alex Hendricks scored 7 each.

Jacob Goff had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Braves, who finish 12-15.

The Dragons will match up with Eden Valley-Watkins at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. John’s.

Paynesville clipped Minnewaska in overtime to scrub the Lakers from the Section 6AA-South behind a 32-point night from Mitchell Weidner.

Weidner drained six 3-pointers and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Andrew Topp picked up 13 points, and Matt Quade had 6 points with 9 boards.

Riley Thompson, Matt McIver, Austin Ostrander and Jayden Beecher all scored in double-digits for the Lakers, who finish the season 11-15.

Paynesville (11-13) will face New London-Spicer on Saturday at St. John’s.

The Jaguars rested their starters the final 10 minutes of their Section 5A playoff win over Royalton on Thursday.

Brian Goodwin scored 30 points, Billy Borgerding scored 18 and James Kuefler had 14.

Goodwin also had 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 9 steals while Kuefler also pulled down 7 boards and made 7 steals.

The 25-1 Jaguars play next the winner of the Swanville and Isle quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. Saturday in Little Falls.

The win was the 71st consecutive home victory for the Jaguars in their seniors’ final home game. They are one win shy of tying Walnut Grove’s state record of 72.
