Boys basketball roundup: Olson, Wildcats rebuff Thunder Hawks

NEW LONDON — Each team struck for eight 3-pointers and New London-Spicer sank only one two-pointer than visiting Montevideo but the difference in the 63-55 final was largely at the line.

The Wildcats tapped the charity strike for 15 (of 20) makes to the Thunder Hawks 9 of 11.

Pivotal was a point in the second half after the Hawks had closed to 46-41 at the 7:48 mark. The Cats responded with a pair of 3-point plays by Bree Olson and then Tyson Gislason, plus a steal-go-layup and foul by Shane Zylstra (he missed the free throw) in the span of a minute to pump the home team lead to 54-41.

Olson sank 4 of 6 threes on the way to a game-high 21 points. Ryan Vraa followed with 15 points (3 triples), Zylsra 14 and Gislason 9, plus 11 boards. Olson also had 5 helpers.

Monte’s Jordan Thompson doused 5 of 11 threes for 19 points. Dazhown Coleman added 13 while Spencer Hildahl contriubed 7 points and 10 rebounds.

Brian Goodwin had 27 points and 4 steals for a Jaguars team that turned the ball over just five times and limited Pierz to 7 second-half points.

BBE plays a big game Friday at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The Lakers are ranked No. 5 in Class AA while the Jaguars are ranked No. 2 in Class A.
