Boys basketball roundup: RCW tops KMS in play-in game

RENVILLE — Griffin Schaub scored 19 points and two other Jaguars scored in double figures as Renville County West upended Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 59-31 Friday to advance to the Section 3A-North quarterfinals.

Ian Engstrom followed Schaub with 13 points and Brady Holwerda chipped in another 11 for RCW, which plays at 11 a.m. Saturday against top-seeded Dawson-Boyd in Montevideo. Schaub drained four 3-pointers and Holwerda another three.

Holwerda also supplied a team-high 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks, while Engstrom pocketed a team-high 5 steals and Schaub shelled out a team-high 4 assists.

James Faulkner had 15 points and 3 steals, and Preston Mahlum contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Fighting Saints. Brandon Dahl and Brody Lindquist also hooked 7 boards.

New London-Spicer caught fire midway through the second half and didn’t let up in a Wright County Conference game on Friday in Hutchinson.

The game was tied 51-51 with about 12 minutes left but the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 30-11 over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.

Defensively, Hutchinson had trouble when the Wildcats began playing zone in the second half and NLS was able to convert turnovers into points.

Ryan Vraa was just four rebounds shy of a triple-double, finishing with 20 points, 6 boards, 10 assists and 2 steals.

Brett Olson also double-doubled, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Ethan Bohlsen did likewise, scoring 14 points and garnering a game-high 11 rebounds.

Shane Zylstra scored 16 points and Tyson Gislason had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Wildcats open the Section 6AA playoffs against St. John’s Prep at 7 p.m. Thursday in New London.

The Owls hung with Henning through the first half but couldn’t keep pace in the second and fell in a non-conference game Friday in Henning.

Taylor Holleman wrapped up his regular-season career with 24 points and 9 rebounds, and Collin Brown hit three 3-point shots and finished with 9 points.

The Owls open the Section 6A playoffs at Ashby at 7 p.m. Monday.
