ST. CLOUD — The Tigers got a couple of clinching free throws in the second overtime to snuff the Willmar Cardinals upset bid 91-88 late Saturday afternoon in the St. Cloud Tech gym.

Fans saw an exciting 3-point shootout that was tied 74-all after regulation and 82-82 at the end of the  first extra period.

Tech (9-0, CLC, 12-2), which has won 9 straight, hit 12 of 24 from the arc to the visitor’s 15 of 40 (27 percent).

Willmar banged away at 67 percent clip on two-point tries but at the line Tech went 15 of 19 to the Cards’ 7 of 10.

Willmar senior guard Tyler Stegeman led all scorers with 33 points.

Isaac Matchinsky swished 7 of 10 threes and  25 points and Andy Foley followed with 24 more for Tech, which led 46-44 at half.

The Tigers have won nine straight.

Willmar is 6-2 in the Central Lakes, both losses to the Tigers. Behind Stegeman, who made 9 steals, came Kyler Johnson with 15 points, Dylan Schueler 13 points (9 rebounds) and Adam Nibaur with 11 points. Johnson made a pair of free throws late in the second OT to cut Tech lead to  89-88 but Foley made two at the line at the other end to close it out.

Willmar will host St. Cloud Apollo Friday.

Dawson-Boyd kept its perfect season alive, beating Class AAA Worthington behind another double-double from Michael Lee (26 points, 15 rebounds), and 18 points and 9 assists from Joey Lee.

Noah Stelter added 12 points and hit four 3-pointers.

Hancock, searching for its first win of the season, took 13-2 Verndale to the wire in a non-conference game on Saturday.

Taylor Holleman led the Owls with 33 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, and Colin Brown finished with 10 points.
