NEW LONDON -- A balanced attack from New London-Spicer overcame Dan Weidner's game-high 23 points for Paynesville as the Wildcats collected a 54-46 win Tuesday in a West Central North Conference contest.

Paynesville (0-1, 2-7) led 9-2 early, but NLS (1-1, 5-7) chipped away and eventually took a 26-22 lead at halftime. The Wildcats never gave up the lead in the second half.

Joey Dreier had 12 points and 8 assists and sophomore Tyson Gislason pumped in 11 more points and hooked 5 rebounds for NLS.

"Gislason is playing better and better, and Dreier was finding people with his assists in the second half and attacked the zone well," said NLS coach Chad Schmiesing.

No other player scored in double figures for the Wildcats, but Sam Quam added 8 points while Trent Boie, Tyler Halvorson and Aaron Ruter all scored 6.

Paynesville had Josh Bungum trail Weidner with 8 points, but no one else scored more than 4.

BIRD ISLAND -- Five players scored in double figures and Kyle Athmann drained four 3-pointers to help BOLD hand Benson its first loss in the West Central South Conference as the Warriors outlasted Benson 79-67 Tuesday.

The Warriors (1-2, 3-6) led the entire game and owned a 29-point lead at one point in the second half. The eight treys -- four in each half -- helped overcome Sam Peterson scoring a game-high 32 points for Benson. Peterson scored 21 in the second half.

The Dragons improved to 5-0 in the conference and 9-2 overall.

Litchfield trailed by as many as 12 points midway through the second half before tying the game and forcing OT.

The Dragons' Mitch Wollin hit a shot to tie the game at 65 in the second overtime, and after an Orono turnover, Whitchurch drove the land, drew and foul and hit the winning foul shots.
