Boys Basketball: Top-ranked BBE rolls into 6A South semis

BROOTEN -- Kirby Montbriand netted a career-high 23 points and top-ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa took care of business Thursday in eliminating Brandon/Evansville 78-37 in the quarterfinals of the Section 6A South playoffs.

The unbeaten Jaguars (27-0) raced to a 56-19 lead at halftime en route to defusing the No. 9-seeded Chargers (10-15) for the second time this season. BBE also beat Brandon/Evansville 75-37 on Feb. 4 in Brandon.

BBE will meet No. 4 Henning (19-7) at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the sub-section semifinals at UM-Morris. The two have not met this season. No. 3 Battle Lake and No. 3 Ashby meet in the late semifinal-game Saturday.

Montbriand knocked down half of BBE's eight 3-pointers with Billy Borgerding draining the other four en route to scoring 14 points. The Jaguars were 8-for-19 from beyond the arc and 31-for-67 overall from the field.

Connor Goodwin added 16 points and Brian Goodwin another 15 for BBE. Connor led the team with 10 rebounds, while Brian added 7 assists and 7 steals. James Kuefler added 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

Ashby 62, Hancock 56

The No. 6 seed Hancock came close to knocking off No. 3 Ashby. The Owls (9-16) led 34-33 at the half, but only managed 22 points in the second to Ashby's 29.

Taylor Holleman's double-double paced Hancock, which shot 55 percent from the field (31-for-56) with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bryan Shaw had 8 points and 5 assists and Jordan Miller added 12 points and 3 steals.

Ashby's Riley Mickelson led all scorers with 20 points.
