Boys basketball: Unger, Rambow lead Cards in OT

WILLMAR -- Willmar's Jimmy Unger hit a go-ahead 3-point shot from the top of the key with 35 seconds left in overtime, and Bemidji's Carey Woods' short runner with 18 seconds left to regain the lead was in the basket, then out, and Willmar hung on for a 71-68 non-conference victory Saturday at Willmar High School.

Bemidji took a late lead after trailing by 12 in the second half, but Unger and Austin Rambow rescued the Cards.

"I had a quick look," said Unger, who finished with 30 points, of the 3-pointer that put Willmar ahead 69-68. "I was coming off a screen and took a hand-off (from Dean Stier)," he said. "I felt it. It felt good."

Conversely, Woods said the same thing about his potential go-ahead shot.

"I thought it was down," said Woods, shaking his head slightly. "I had a good look it, it was a good shot, it just rolled out."

The Cards (15-6) led by a dozen in the second half before the Lumberjacks recharged.

"The kids stopped doing what they did in the first half," said Willmar head coach Steve Grove. "We were not aggressive, we were standing around, and we let them take the game to us."

Rambow played a solid game, with 11 rebounds and 5 assists to go with his 17 points, which include the two big insurance foul shots in overtime.
