Boys basketball: Wildcats power past Chargers

NEW LONDON — New London-Spicer opened up a 17-4 lead to start the game and didn’t let up, taking down Dassel-Cokato 79-54 on Tuesday in a Wright County Conference game.

The Wildcats bumped their conference record to 4-9 and are 14-10 overall.

D-C, still winless in conference play, is 4-20 overall.

Shane Zylstra scored a game-high 23 points, including a dunk on an assist from Adam Essler, and also grabbed 12 rebounds.

The dunk came during a 17-0 run by the Wildcats that made the score 65-34, after the Chargers had gotten within 14 points at 12:50 in the second half.

Ryan Vraa notched 15 points, 3 steals and 3 assists, and Tyson Gislason had 6 points and 7 rebounds.

Devin Fostervold and Brett Olson also had double-digit nights for the Wildcats.

NLS shot 48 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range, while out-rebounding the Chargers 47-26.

The Wildcats next play Friday at Hutchinson.
