Boys golf: Wildcats’ Bohlsen medalist at New London-Spicer Invite
NEW LONDON — Finally, a great day for golf.
New London-Spicer sophomore Ethan Bohlsen and the entire Albany golf team played as brightly as the deep-green grass and blue water.
Bohlsen shot a three-over par 75 to capture medalist, winning a scorecard tiebreaker with the Huskies’ low man, Jordan LeClair. All four Albany ball-strikers finished top 5 scoring under 80.
Their 308 score was a season-best by 16 strokes.
Nine complete teams competed with the temp in the low 60s in full sun. New London-Spicer Gold placed second with a 319 followed by Litchfield at 322.
The field was reduced by the cramped spring and some teams didn’t send their ‘A’ team intact.
Bohlsen, who play the No. 4 slot for the Wildcats, shot 35 going out on Pines and was on the way to par 72 when he faltered on his last two holes, Willows 2 and 3. He double bogeyed the former and missed a five-footer for par on final hole for bogey.
The missed putt followed a grand recovery shot after sailing his 150-yard approach over the green and nearly into the pond beyond. From 30 yards, he played a bank shot under an overhanging branch. The ball hit the grade, popped onto the green and rolled straight to the pin.
“Bet you can’t do that again,” teased playing partner Zach Luethmers of Albany, who finished with a 79.
It’s his first first-place finish though he also tied for medalist once before, that time losing the scorecard playoff.
Teammate Joey Dreier, the Cats’ No. 1, tied for fifth with a 79 as did Jordan Redepenning of Litchfield.
Lac qui Parle Valley sophomore Riley Sigdahl also came in 79. It came within a stroke of his best score this spring, a 78 at Tyler.
Jason Dickerson with an 83 and Brady Damhof at 84 led the closely packed Willmar JV.
Willmar hosts the CLC meet Monday (3:45 pm), NLS next is at Hutchinson Wednesday for a Wright County meet, Litchfield is at the Annandale Invite on Monday and MACCRAY competes at the Camden girls and boys conference meet on Monday in Marshall.
