Boys hockey: Cards go 2-0 on the Range

VIRGINIA — Senior wing Hunter Schneider continued to dynamite his way through the third period on Saturday as Willmar concluded its two-day journey on the Iron Range.
After two scoreless periods at Miner’s Memorial arena, Schneider lit the fuse on Willmar’s third straight victory with a pair of goals to defeat the Blue Devils of Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl 2-1.
Schneider scored a pure hat track in the third stanza at Eveleth the night before, a 6-0 victory over the Golden Bears.
Cardinal goalie Joey Benson was working on a second consecutive shutout in hockey country when the Devils’ Jordan Prybylski scored with 91 seconds left in the third frame.
Benson finished with 29 stops after stopping all 15 he faced at Eveleth the night before in a 6-0 Willmar victory at the Hippodrome.
Schneider’s first goal was on a powerplay; Evan VanDenEinde had a helper on the second. Schneider hiked his team-high goal account to 23 with 23 assists.
The Cardinals (10-7-1) are at Sauk Rapids (4-12-1) on Tuesday before hosting Alexandria on Thursday in the second game of a girl/boy doubleheader with the Douglas County Cardinals.
