Boys hockey: Hagen’s late goal lifts Cards
WILLMAR — Sophomore forward Isaac Kobenia pocketed three assists and senior forward Cole Hagen scored unassisted midway through the third period to break a 3-3 tie and give Willmar a 4-3 win over Section 3A foe New Ulm Tuesday.
With New Ulm (9-8) on a power play, Hunter Mottinger scored 1:31 into the second period for a 2-1 Willmar lead, the senior center’s second shorthanded goal in as many games. Six minutes later senior forward Evan VanDenEinde put Willmar (8-8) up 3-1. But the Eagles scored 11 seconds later and with 46 seconds left in the period to tie the game at 3-3 after 40 minutes of play.
Cardinals senior defenseman Buzzy Tollefson put Willmar up 1-0 early after getting a feed from Kobenia.
“Levi Goosmann held us in and made some huge saves against their power plays,” said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson. “We found a way to win.”
Goosmann made 15 saves in the first and second periods combined before turning away 12 New Ulm shots in the final period.
The Eagles had a slight edge in shots, 30-29.
Both teams are now 4-0 in section games. The Cardinals host Sauk Rapids on Thursday for a Central Lakes Conference game.
