WILLMAR — Sophomore wing Isaac Kobienia scored the hat trick and had helpers on four  other goals while senior goalie Levi Goosman returned to the cage after a month-long absence spurring Willmar to an 8-2 win over the Golden Bears of Eveleth-Gilbert on Friday evening.

Goosman, who had 23 stops, last played Dec. 14, a 3-1 win at Marshall. The next week he broke the thumb on his blocker hand while refereeing adult hockey.

Willmar also plugged in its power play generating three goals through two periods for a 4-1 lead on the Golden Bears (9-4-1).

Kobienia’s seven points is astonishing for the 150-pound sophomore playing on the first line with Hunter Mottinger and EvanVanDenEinde. But he  has been on fire this month. In a recent JV game, he scored four straight goals in the third period alone.

Mottinger supplied four points and two goals. Riley Grabow, Cole Hagen and Buzzy Tollefson also scored goals.

Sam Roberts and Mitch Huffman scored for E-G, who play in Hutchinson today.

Also today, at 3 p.m. at the Cardinal Arena, Willmar plays Virginia/Mt. Iron-Buhl.

“Goosman had some big save early and when we got that power play goal early that all gave us confidence,” said coach Dan Tollefson.
