Boys Hockey Roundup: Kobienia’s hat trick fuels Cardinals’ rout

WINDOM — A Windom goal about a minute in to the game seemed to wake up the Willmar boys hockey team, which responded with four straight goals and then three more in the third to drill Eagles 7-2 on Saturday in a non-conference game.

Isaac Kobienia recorded a hat trick and an assist, T.J. Mattison scored twice and Hunter Mottinger assisted on four goals for the Cardinals, who most likely locked up a No. 2 seed in Section 3A.

Willmar (10-11) is currently ranked No. 2 behind Luverne and has victories this season over No. 3 New Ulm, No. 4 Hutchinson, No. 5 Marshall and No. 6 Windom.

Willmar hosts CLC rival Sartell on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Against Windom, Willmar’s Evan VanDenEinde scored a goal and had two assists and Riley Grabow knotted with a first-period goal.

Ryan Woltjer had two assists and Sam Anez and Cole Block also assisted on goals. Levi Goosmann made 22 saves for the win.
