Boys hockey roundup: Willmar defeats WDC to open playoffs

The Willmar boys hockey team will play Alexandria on Tuesday after opening the Section 6A playoffs with a 10-1 home win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Saturday.

The Cardinals scored seven first-period goals against the Wolverines and outshot WDC 46-14.

Hunter Schneider scored four goals and six other players also found the net for the the Cardinals, who now play the section's No. 2-seed Alexandria at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Alexandria.

Wadena-Deer Creek really had no chance after about the first 10 minutes. Willmar scored nine seconds into the game, then added two goals over the next nine minutes.

Schneider had hit hat trick before the game was 15 minutes old.

PAYNESVILLE -- Tanner Anderson's goal at 4:49 of the second overtime lifted River Lakes to a 3-2 win over Northern Lakes in the Section 8AA playoffs on Saturday.

The Stars are into the second round of the playoffs at Bemidji on Tuesday.

River Lakes rebounded from a two-goal first-period deficit to tie the game on two short-handed goals from Reed Pfannenstein.

After the first period, however, River Lakes' goalie Chris Skluzacek and Northern Lakes' Joey Bergquist combined to make 75 saves.
