Boys hockey: Sabres overtake Cards
SARTELL — After a blazing start, the Willmar Cardinals couldn’t hold off the Sartell Sabres at Bernicks Arena and suffered a 4-2 Central Lakes Conference loss.
The Cardinals came out raining 16 shots on Sabres netkeeper Carter Kasianov. Two got by: Joey Lee at 12:01 and Hunter Mottinger at 13:22.
But the Sabres retaliated in the middle frame skating off four Willmar power plays while planting two pucks in the Cardinals net, guarded by Jacob Anderson, for a 2-all tie.
The Sabres had just skated off a five-minute major that ended in the first minute of the third period when a Willmar penalty put them on the power play. Spencer Zwiener converted the opportunity for a 3-2 Sabres’ edge at 2:09.
“We really came out great in the first period,” Cardinals’ head coach Dan Tollefson said. “(Sartell) kind of got some momentum. If we could’ve made a couple more plays we could’ve had it.”
The home team continued to out-quick the Cardinals and padded the lead in the 11th minute, Keenan Lund scoring from an extreme angle for a 4-2 lead, the final margin.
Willmar outshot the Sabres 25 to 10.
The Cardinals are again on the road Saturday for a first-time meeting with the Luverne Cardinals, a Section 3A foe.
