Boys hockey: Schneider’s overtime goal tips Marshall

MARSHALL — The Willmar Cardinals rebounded from a two touchdown loss at Alexandria on Thursday with a 3-2 extra-period decision over the Marshall Tigers on Saturday at Lyons County Ice Arena in Marshall.
Hunter Schneider’s second goal of the game 2:38 into overtime ended the non-conference contest. Buzzy Tollefson assisted.
Willmar goalie Joey Benson stopped both shots he faced in overtime to finish with 16 saves. The Cards (4-3-1) put 20 salvos on the Tigers’ netminder Adam Cavazos.
Marshall (4-3) led 1-0 after one period but Schneider’s solo effort tied it 1-1 through two.
Zech Streed put Willmar up for the first time 2-1 with Schneider and Preston Peterson cooperating on the marker with 3:16 gone in the third.
But the Tigers would send it into sudden death on Quinn Horvath’s unassisted goal at 13:44.
