Boys Hockey: Schneider scores hat trick as Willmar topples Tigers

LITTLE FALLS —  Hunter Schneider’s three-goal burst in the third period allowed Willmar to separate from the Hutchinson Tigers for a 5-2 win on the final day of the three-day Little Falls Invitational on Saturday.

Willmar’s Zech Streed and the Tigers’ Tory Adams scored first period goals.

Cole Hagen, who scored Willmar’s lone goal in Friday’s 6-1 loss to the host team, scored the only goal of the second period. It put Willmar in the permanent lead. Schneider assisted.

Two of the goals in Schneider’s hat trick came shorthanded.

Adams second goal made it 4-2 Willmar before Schneider beat Hutch goalie Zach Allen for a third time.

Willmar goalie Joey Benson took care of 32 of 34 shots by the Tigers.

Hutchinson (1-8) outshot Willmar 34-21.

After going 2-1 at the invite, Willmar (6-5-1) plays at section foe Breckenridge/Wahpeton next year, on Thursday.

Stars’ goalie Chris Skluzacek rejected 38 of 39 shots off the Henry Sibley stics and had the second assist on a second period goal for a 2-0 lead in the third-place game at Paynesville on Friday.

Matt Kissner, Grant Thompson, Dylan Jude and Stefan Tomovic notched goals for the Stars (5-6), who finish 2-1 at their own invite.
