Tanner Picht sandwiched a hat trick around Brody Gimbelin’s second-period goal to lead the Morris/Benson Area Storm to a 4-2 win over Luverne on Saturday at the Benson Civic Center.

Benson’s win snapped the Cardinals’ nine-game winning streak and the Storm have won seven of their last eight games and are just a game behind second-place Luverne and 1-1/2 games behind Southwest Conference-leading Marshall.

The Storm plays Marshall on Tuesday in Benson. Marshall’s 5-2 win over Morris/Benson Area on Jan. 17 was the Storm’s only loss since Dec. 28.

Picht opened the scoring on assists from Mac Beyer and Gimberlin, the added a second goal to five the Storm a 2-1 in the second period on an assist from Andrew Rentz.

Gimberlin put the Storm up 3-1 on assists from Jordan Staples and Taner Gimberlin in the second. Luverne pulled within a goal early in the third, but Picht iced the final with a short-handed goal in the third.

Jake Herges scored unassisted goals in the second and third periods to break a 2-2 tie and lead River Lakes to a 4-2 victory over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato on Saturday in Paynesville.

Herges also assisted on Joe Spaulding’s goal to open the scoring 59 seconds into the game. Dylan Jude also scored for River Lakes in a four-goal first period. Stegan Tomovic and Daiton Johnson also assisted on goals for River Lakes.

Kent Ryynanen and Aaron Haataja scored first period goals of Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, with Haataja’s goal giving the Dragons a 2-1 lead.
