Boys hockey: Tech hands Cardinals another one-goal loss
ST. CLOUD — Willmar locked up in another close game but again came up short at the horn, falling to St. Cloud Tech 2-1 on Tuesday.
Justin Oberg’s goal, assisted by Riley Bates, at 2:44 of the third broke a 1-1 tie that existed since the 8:06 mark of the first stanza.
“It was a good game,” Cardinals’ head coach Dan Tollefson said. “Close game. We had a couple chances where we didn’t capitalize and they just happened to get that one in the third that was the game-winner.”
Four of Willmar’s last five games have been decided by a goal; this was the third lost in that string.
Zech Streed put Willmar up 1-0 in the tilt’s fifth minutes, with a helper by Hunter Schneider. Austin Keller’s marker four minutes later knotted the score.
Fast, tight and free-skated with a minimum of penalties, the game was played on the rink at the National Hockey Center on the St. Cloud State campus.
Shots were near event at 24-23 with the edge to the Tigers (10-3, 13-8). Joey Benson stopped 22 of 24 shots in the Willmar cage.
Willmar (2-10-1, 12-11-1) now has eight days before playing its final game on the schedule, at Sartell on Feb. 14.
