Boys Hockey: Tollefson's three goals lifts Cards past Prairie Centre

WILLMAR -- Trey Tollefson scored the natural hat trick as the Willmar Cardinals burned Prairie Centre 4-1 on Saturday at the Cardinal Arena.

After Preston Peterson's goal in the last minute of the first period made it 1-0, Tollefson, a junior forward, scored the next three goals for Willmar (8-12).

It was an important win against a Section 6A opponent for the Cardinals (8-12). Prairie Centre is 11-8-1 but is 0-for-6 facing Central Lakes Conference teams this winter.

Derek Baker stopped 21 of 22 shots on net for the win. Willmar put 30 shots on goal, including 15 in the first period.

Trailing 1-0 after two periods, Luverne outscored the Storm 3-2 in a wild third period to send it into overtime. The Cardinals put 9 shots on the MBA cage, but goalie Matt Huot was flawless and the game ended in a tie. Luke Schwarz, Kelly Engquist and Mac Beyer scored for the Storm.
