WILLMAR — Jesus Nevarez scored three goals and Diego Millan had three assists to lead the Willmar boys soccer team to a 6-1 win over Marshall in a non-conference season-opener on Tuesday at Kennedy School.

The Cardinals open their Central Lakes Conference schedule against St. Cloud Apollo at 5 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy.

Willmar’s David Gomez opened the scoring in the second minute on an assist from Alex McLouth, who also scored a second-half goal and assisted on Matt Wideman’s goal in the ninth minute.

Nevarez scored in the seventh minute of the first half, again on an assist from Millan, and Nevarez and Millan hooked up on a third goal in the 61st minute. Nevarez scored unassisted in the 14th minute.

“It was a good game for us,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “We had some jitters since it was the first time for some guys on a varsity field and in a varsity uniform. But they came out strong.”

Willmar’s defense was superb in front of goalies Manny Obregon, who played the first half, and Jose Castillo, who played the second.

Willmar also controlled the offensive flow, Winter said.

“We played a really strong passing game, he said.
