Boys soccer: Cards fall to Sauk Rapids
WILLMAR -- In an intense, well-played match on the Kennedy field, the Sauk Rapids Storm edged the Willmar Cardinals 2-1 on Thursday.
It was "Stephen Reynolds Night" at the pitch, honoring the late 3-sport Cardinal athlete who died in his sleep last November. The family was presented a framed home and away jerseys signed by his teammates on the 2011 team. His No. 5 is retired for the season.
The Storm scored both their goals in the first 17 minutes. Willmar answered early in the second half on a goal by junior midfielder Juan Contreras.
But the Cardinals were unable to penetrate the Sauk defense for any quality shots after that.
Sauk's advantage in height was apparent in their ability to win nearly every airborne ball. The Storms' transition game was also quicker.
The Cardinals lost their second CLC match in three days to a St. Cloud area school.
The Storm (1-1-1, 3-1-1) got goals from Issa Ibrahim and Erik Cooper.
Charlie Trochil made 6 stops in the Willmar cage.
