Boys soccer: Cards pound New Ulm 8-2
WILLMAR — Willmar’s offense opened up on a Section 2A opponent on Saturday, with Isaac Yoakum leading the way with four goals in an 8-2 win over New Ulm at Kennedy School.
Juan Contreras scored 2 goals and assisted on another, and Alex McLouth finished with a goal and two assists.
Christian Vallecillo scored a Cardinals’ goal, and he, Patrick Courtney and David Gomez each had an assist.
“We have six games in 10 days so it was nice to play a game like this that was less physical,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “It takes less of a toll on our players.”
The Cardinals improved to 8-4-1 and play Alexandria at 4 p.m. today at Kennedy. They play St. Cloud Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Cloud State, and they wrap their conference schedule against Brainerd at home at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Willmar has outscored its last two opponents 15-2.
“It’s nice to get a couple of wins in a row, one a section game and another one in the conference (7-2 over Fergus Falls on Thursday),” Winter said. “It’s nice to peak at the right time.”
