Boys soccer: Cards roll past Otters
WILLMAR -- The Cardinals found the win column for just the second time in five games Thursday after junior goalie Charlie Trochlil posted his fourth shutout of the season to spark Willmar's 6-0 Central Lakes Conference win over Fergus Falls.
Willmar climbed back to .500 overall, improving to 4-4, and logged its second CLC win in five tries.
Five different Cardinals netted a goal with senior David Dominquez striking twice. Junior Becerra, one of six seniors on the varsity squad, scored in the first minute on an assist from Joe Leuze, another senior. Dominquez then pocketed his first goal on the day four minutes later on a penalty kick.
"That was a spark," said Willmar coach Jeff Winter on the two early goals. "We then cooled off. We dominated the play and got good shots, but they went just wide."
Senior Wilson Esquivel scored on a feed from Becerra on a corner kick eight minutes into the second half to up Willmar's lead to 3-0. Junior Juan Contreras and sophomore Christian Vallecillo upped the lead to 5-0 midway through the second half before Dominquez capped the scoring in the 80th minute on another corner kick.
"The defense did a nice job collecting the ball and keeping it in our offensive zone," added Winter.
Trochlil made 11 saves to earn a shutout while Willmar put 20 shots on the Otters' (0-4, 1-6) net.
Willmar will host Central Minnesota Christian on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in a non-conference match.
