Boys Soccer: Fairmont trips up Willmar
WILLMAR -- Playing with the wind made a big difference.
The Willmar boys soccer team didn't have the friendly gusts blowing behind them and it caught up with the Cardinals as they lost to Fairmont 3-2 in a Section 2A quarterfinal match Saturday at Kennedy Field.
Fairmont's winning goal came off an upfield toss by goalkeeper Patrick Courtney. The wind caught the ball and deposited it in front of Fairmont's Caleb Harris, who caught Courtney out of position with a blast from about 40 yards away.
Willmar's second goal came when Handerson Tevalan drove the ball to the back off a pass from Liam Johnston.
Fairmont created minimal offensive chances, but they made the most of its opportunities: First score was on a header off a corner kick. The second Fairmont goal game off a free kick from the side.
