Boys Soccer: Late goal allows Cardinals to tie up Tech
WILLMAR — Willmar boys soccer team defender Brady Damhof scored on a free kick from midfield with 12 seconds left and the Cardinals earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw with St. Cloud Tech on Thursday at Kennedy School.
The Cardinals improved to 2-1-1, and they play a Section 2A game against Hutchinson at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy.
After Damhof’s goal the teams played a scoreless overtime, although Willmar’s Isaac Yoakum was breaking free on an open attack when time expired.
The Cardinals outplayed the Tigers much of the latter stages of the match, said Cardinals head coach Jeff Winter.
“We had many more shots in the overtime,” Winter said. “Late in second half and in overtime, we dominated play.”
The Cardinals hit the post on one strike and another shot flew just over the cross bar, Winter said.
“We had some real nice chances,” he said. “It could have been our game but I was really pleased with our effort.”
Tech scored in the first half and Willmar tied it on Christian Vallecillo’s goal, on an assist from Teza Harrison, in the 54th minute. Tech scored in the 76th minute but Damhof’s goal about four minutes later forced OT.
