SARTELL -- The Willmar Cardinals fell 3-0 at Sartell in boys soccer on Tuesday.

"There was some pretty ugly stuff," said coach Jeff Winter.

A Willmar player, co-captain Junior Becerra, received a red card late in the second half when he verbally confronted the Sabres' goalkeeper, Skylar Gardner, over alleged racial slurs.

Winter said he didn't hear anything specific nor did the referee but added that Becerra was standing up for a teammate. The head coach said that there was a lot of jawing on the pitch and some of it was racial, according to his players.

Winter said the game was physical with a lot of pushing right from the start. Willmar held the Sabres scoreless until the final second of the first half when sophomore Carter Kasianov scored on goalie Charlie Trochlil and the Willmar defense.

"That took the wind out of our sails," said Winter. "The guys acted like the game was over. I told them it was just one half."

Willmar faltered after the red card and Sartell senior Jared Frost scored back-to-back goals at 55:00 and 66:00.

"We let them get under our skin," said Winter. "They beat us mentally and that's 90 percent of this game."

Willmar (1-1, 2-2) will host Sauk Rapids on Thursday without Becerra who is suspended for one game. The Sabres improved to 2-1 in the CLC and 2-2 overall.
