Boys soccer: Willmar falls 2-1
ALEXANDRIA — Willmar was just moments from keeping its unbeaten streak alive Thursday, but Alexandria struck in the final minute of the second overtime period to edge Willmar 2-1 in a Central Lakes Conference match.
Willmar outshot Alexandria 27-12.
“We had a lot of chances (in overtime) and they didn’t, but they made the most of their chances and we did not,” said Willmar coach Jeff Winter. “We had a lot of wide shots and (shots) to the goalie.”
Juan Contreras scored midway through the second period for Willmar (2-1-1, 4-2-1) after receiving a cross-field pass from David Gomez. After Contreras received the pass he dribbled around the defender and punched the ball in the bottom left corner.
Alexandria (2-3, 3-5) took a quick 1-0 lead after Kevin Roedel scored three minutes into the match.
Now with its five-match unbeaten streak snapped, Willmar will try to start a new streak on Monday when it travels down Highway 23 to face Marshall on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.
