Boys soccer: Willmar falls to Alex

ALEXANDRIA -- Willmar scored first at Alexandria but the other Cardinals got the next two markers to claim a 2-1 victory in Central Lakes boys soccer on Tuesday.

Junior Becarra kicked a ball past Alexandria keeper Zach Lamb 12 minutes into the night game. Joe Leuze provided an assist on a kick covering half the field that Becarra chased down and then buried upper-right from 30 feet out.

"That was a nice goal. We were really passing the ball well the first 20 minutes and everyone was feeling pretty good," said coach Jeff Winter.

But Alex tied it on a penalty kick 1-1 by halftime. They went ahead in minute 48 on a goal by Jesse Ohman.

Willmar outshot the host team 12-10 but had some breakdowns at midfield. Though they often dominated the ball, they were unable to work passing combinations with much success.

Willmar had a great chance to tie the contest late on a penalty kick, but a sure-shot David Dominguez effort glanced off the post.

Charlie Trochlil finished with 8 saves in the Willmar goal.
