A year ago, the Sabres finished on top with the Warriors next.

The individual standout was Fergus Falls senior Cal Mouritsen, who swam on two winning relays and won the 100 and 200 freestyles. In all, the Otters won 6 of the 11 swim events plus diving, where Otters were 1-2.

But Fergus lacks the depth to challenge for the top spot and ended up fourth behind third-place St. Cloud Tech.

Willmar placed eighth. Trent Flegel took sixth in the 50 free while the 200 free relay placed fifth (Charlie Hopman, Teman Miller, Sid Sieu, Flegel).

“We had a solid day,” said Willmar coach Carl Shuldes. “Most of our swimmers haven’t rested with sections upcoming and just held times. Drops weren’t expected.”

The 3A Section meet is at Hutchinson noon on Feb. 22.
