Boys tennis: 1-doubles gets Cards 1st win

WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals’ enforced indoor labor paid off on Friday, scoring a 4-3 win over Sartell in Central Lakes Conference boys tennis in warm sunshine.

The deciding point was provided in a tense three-set match with a match-ending tiebreaker won by the Cardinals’ Tate Hovland/Tom Nilles-Melchert.

Willmar picked up three points at singles with Drew Corneil at 2- and Jarod Swoboda at 4-singles getting their first varsity wins. Isaac Yoakum at 3-singles went to 2-0 while returning No. 1 Preston Peterson marked his season debut losing a tight three-setter.

Willmar plays for the third straight day at 1 p.m. today against Alexandria and will play their fourth straight home match Monday hosting Fergus Falls.
