Boys tennis: Cardinals deck Brainerd in OT
BRAINERD — The Willmar Cardinals slipped by Brainerd 4-3 on Thursday running their record to 6-1 in the Central Lakes and 9-2 overall.
Jarod Swoboda supplied the match-ending point surviving a taut 3-setter against Brainerd’s Patrick Meyer 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
Manny Obregon won at 4-singles 7-5, 6-0. Doubles points came from Tate Hovland/Nick Courtney and Tom Kersetter/Nick Revier.
The win gave the Cards a sweep of Brainerd (both 4-3); next week Willmar has three CLC matches to end the regular seasons, starting with the last home match of the regular season on Tuesday vs. Sartell.
During the bad weather, players have drilled at the City Auditorium, which has proved a suitable shelter out of the rain and cold.
“The boys have worked hard,” said coach Jim Anderson. “They go out now expecting to win.”
